FA Cup exit

The Latics have been eliminated from this seasons FA Cup with a 3-2 defeat at Carlisle United. Manager Richie Wellens was disappointed with the outcome as he was hoping for a successful run along with the valuable potential revenue it would have generated.

He said, “I’m massively disappointed, it’s a real tough one because we can’t criticise the players, their attitude was spot on. In the first 20 minutes there was only one team in it and we missed chance after chance. When a lower league team beats a team who’s got more quality they have to have an unbelievable day and we have an off day or we miss chances and their keeper has a worldy. Their keeper pulled off some really good saves but we missed chance after chance especially to take the lead, we should have been two or three up before they scored. I want us to attack, I want us to score goals, I want us to play good football but I’m thinking, ‘am I playing too open, am I attacking too much?’”

“When I look at that game, their set piece, two people don’t mark in the box then a long ball into the striker and it bobbles to the other striker who volleys it in. Their third one was the only time they’ve been in our box in the first 20 minutes of the second half so are we too open? No, I just think it’s individual mistakes. We’ve missed a lot of chances and didn’t defended our box well. I’m massively disappointed, it was important that we got a cup run going and get more finances into the club and I wanted to keep the momentum building. The momentum hasn’t stopped because of our performance, we’re just conceding too many goals.”
