Latics manager John Sheridan has completed his first signing by bringing Scottish midfielder Gary McDonald from Kilmarnock to Athletic. Sheridan was first alerted to McDonald when he was sent to watch him by ex-Latics boss Ronnie Moore and he had no hesitiation in giving him a two year deal. The player made 116 appearances for the Killies, scoring 14 goals in the process. He became a free agent and refused terms with Kilmarnock as he needed a change.

McDonald said, "I'm delighted to join Oldham Athletic. I'm impressed by the set-up here, the new manager and the future plans for the stadium. I'm a box to box player and fans can expect me to chip in with a few goals next season. I enjoyed my time at Kilmarnock but I felt it was time for a change. There was interest from other clubs here and abroad but once Oldham came in for me, there was only one place I was going. I'm hopeful we will do very well this season, everything is in place so there is no reason why not."

Sheridan said of the 24 year old six footer, "Gary is young, exciting, hungry and a very fit lad who will work hard between both boxes. He likes to get forward, will slot into the central midfield and he is a great signing and I'm hoping he will score goals from midfield. He can be a threat from setpieces, but he also does a good job defensively."
