Wellens full of confidence for battle against his old team

Richie Wellens is convinced that the Latics can pull back the 2-1 deficit in the play-off second leg against his old team, Blackpool, on Saturday and go all the way to Wembley.

Wellens said, "We've already won at some tough places during the season, so it's our responsibility to get the ball down and go back to that sort of form. We need to be brave, but everyone should be feeling upbeat because we had a decent away record and were one of the highest-scoring teams in our division. Obviously we've got to score, but we won't go bombing forward from the off because we need to get things right defensively as well. If it's level after 60 or 70 minutes and we haven't given Blackpool many chances, they might start to get nervous. Don't get me wrong, Blackpool are a decent side, but I think it's vital for us to forget about winning or losing, no matter how much is at stake at the end of it. We've got to relax, enjoy the day and play our best football. That's one of the ways we picked up so many good away results during the season."

"In the first leg they let their full-backs look after our wide players, which meant their own wingers could 'cheat' a bit by not tracking back. That made it easier for them to attack, so it's important to make sure our midfield four is tight. I'm sure I'll get the same reception as usual, but you waste a lot of nervous energy if you start worrying about what's said by the crowd. It doesn't bother me. All I'm concerned about is doing my best for the team and making sure we get the right result. As soon as I get on the ball I know Blackpool will be closing me down. They might try to smash me a couple of times, but that's football. I'll be trying to get forward more than I did last weekend, although that can be difficult because of the way Blackpool play."
