Workmanlike performance is enough to brush aside the threat

The Latics put in a workmanlike performance to brush aside the threat of any potential cup upset in front of a worldwide TV audience. Goals by top scorer Chris Porter and substitute Chris Hall (pictured) were enough to see the Latics go into the hat for a place in the third round.

John Sheridan commented on the official website, "I thought King's Lynn played well considering the division they're in, but we could have played better. We've set ourselves standards and didn't perform that well. However, I can't moan as two-nil and a clean sheet away from home is pleasing whoever you're playing, and we've come here, done a job and got through to the next round. Les Pogliacomi made a few excellent saves, probably more than he should have had to, and we had a few opportunities to score more goals. However, we've kept the run going and, no matter who you're playing, winning builds confidence. I know we'll perform a lot better against Crewe in midweek. I put Chris Hall on to provide a bit more of a threat up front. We were getting more balls into the box and I wanted to add a little bit more pace as I felt they were very vulnerable at the back to pace and down the channels. I'm good at making substitutions, aren't I!"

"I'm not really fussed who we get. Obviously if we got a big Premiership club that'd be great for us money-wise, and I'm sure the lads would love to play Manchester United or someone like that. However, a lesser team at home would be even better, and would give us a good chance of making the Fourth Round. Getting to the Third Round is good for the fans and the players, everyone's excited and looking forward to the draw, so hopefully we'll get a decent one."

Neal Eardley was very unlucky not to open his goal tally with two excellent shots that goalkeeper Shaun Marshall did well to save. The youngster said, "It would have been nice to get my first goal in the FA Cup. I'll just have to keep trying. We weren't at the races in the first half and we were told to move the ball quicker at half-time. It was a relief to see the second goal go in and that took a little bit of the pressure off in the last ten minutes. To be fair to King's Lynn, they gave it a shot and kept on coming forward. Les Pogliacomi had to make some good saves. We all had a word about that afterwards as they were probably saves he shouldn't have had to make."

Chris Hall, the scorer of the clinching goal added, "My celebration was part of a dance routine that we did in The Full Monty. I promised the rest of the cast I would do it if I scored tonight, so I hope they were watching! It's a great feeling to win again. We expected a tough game but knew in our own minds that we could win it, although you can't be complacent. I was pleased with my performance and obviously it was fantastic to get another goal. Now I just want to carry on bettering myself and working hard. I'd love us to draw Manchester United or Arsenal. Any Premiership side would do really, but those are your dream games."
