The Latics overcame the odds last night to achieve a fine 2-1 win over Oxford United, who were seeking their record-breaking sixth consecutive away victory. Lee Erwin scored both goals, from headers, in an exciting game which entailed a nail-biting finish.

An impressed John Sheridan boasted, “It was an excellent win against a really good team. Their away form is really good, they had a really good season last season and they are doing well in this division. It was a magnificent performance from us and I think we deserved to win the game as well. It was great desire from the players and I can only applaud them as they knew the importance of getting three points after a draw on Saturday. They went out and gave everything I wanted from them so it was a good performance because I wouldn’t like to play against us at the moment. We had some really good chances. We had the better chances and I thought Aaron Holloway was outstanding. I would have loved him to score a goal, he was a handful all night and Lee Erwin gets his two goals. He was in the right place at the right time but again, it was a good battling performance.”

“If you keep winning everything takes care of itself. We have just got to look after ourselves and if we keep on winning then we will be fine. We have a tough game coming up on Saturday against Peterborough United but we go there with the incentive of winning the game.”
