The Football League have released their report on agents fees from last season. The report covers the period from 1st. July 2004 to 30th. June 2005 and is the result of 2,860 player transactions but clubs committed to pay only 379 fees for agents' services. A total of £7,817,853 was paid by league clubs of which £6,157,843 was paid by the signing club.

As expected, the majority of the money was paid from the Championship. 888 transactions took place and 24.9% of the transactions involved a total of £6,834,963 in agents fees. Leeds United committed £1,896,688 in agents fees whereas Crewe Alexandra paid nothing.

In League One a total of 964 transactions resulted in £595,870 being paid to agents, a low 5.8%. Blackpool, Colchester, Huddersfield, Stockport and Wrexham did not pay any agents fees at all. The biggest spenders in League One were promoted Hull City who committed £97,450, although Oldham Athletic spent £44,800 in agents fees and just avoided relegation on the last day of the season.

Down in League Two there were 1,008 player transactions and 6.3% of the transactions involved fees which resulted in £325,020 changing hands. Bury, Cheltenham, Kidderminster, Lincoln, Rochdale, R & D and Scunthorpe did not pay any agents fees. The big spenders in League Two were Swansea City who committed £55,080 in agents fees.

It is good news that the FL are making their figures public and it's time that clubs, players and supporters had their say on the controversial topic of 'agents fees'. What would Tom Finney and Stanley Mathews have made of all this modern approach to football? Money is ruining the game, making the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Although it is acknowledged that a few agents are doing a fair days work it's time something was done to rid the game of some of the piranhas from the game.
