The Latics overcame their first pre-season test with flying colours as they came from behind to record a 1-2 vistory at Holker Street over Barrow. Matt Henney put Barrow in the lead early in the first half after Mark Allott lost the ball. Henney picked up the loose ball and fired in from the edge of the penalty area. Chris Taylor was unlucky when his header came back off the crossbar and then he thought he had equalised just on the stroke of half time but his effort was ruled to be offside. With a 4-5-1 formation obviously not working, Matty Wolfenden replaced Gary McDonald the Latics changed a more regular 4-4-2 set up.

Five minutes into the second half the Latics drew level after debutant J.P. Kalala (pictured) gracefully fired home a Matty Wolfenden cross. Wolfenden hit a post while Stefan Stam and Marcus Holness fluffed good chances to increase the lead. Six minutes from time Lewis Alessandra scored the eventual match winner although he could have easily added another one. John Sheridan was pleased with the performance and admitted that his team had the better of the second half. He used ten substitutions in a game that was a good testament to the fitness of the players.
