After match thoughts

The Latics put in much more workmanlike performance at Wrexham but the Gods don’t seem to be on their side as they went down again to a single goal. Hector Sam did the damage once again with a late strike in injury time that Wrexham hardly deserved if there was any justice at all in football, but there isn’t. Moore started with Killen and Betsy up front and Stam was returned to the side to replace the banned Branston.

David Eyres thought he had opened the scoring in the 18th. minute but he was judged to be offside. Wrexham also had the ball in the net at the start of the second half but that effort too was adjudged offside. The Latics pulled out all the stops in the second half and they had several chances to get into the scoring habit once again. They looked by far the better side, Kilkenny (pictured) was outstanding, but they just couldn’t get the ball in the net. Then came the killer punch and one that could be costly at the end of the season. The Latics still have their own destiny in their hands but it’s got to be an all out effort from the whole club, supporters included, with some tough games coming up.

After the game manager Ronnie Moore told the official site, “I thought it was criminal. We had enough of the game to take the points with two or three gilt-edged chances. We had a free header in the box. We were the better side and I was pleased with the formation and the system, although the decision making could have been better. It's like a knife in the heart that we didn't take the opportunities when they came. We switched off for a split second and good professionals shouldn't do that. Overall it was a thankless task for Killen on his own. Kilkenny pushed up but if you're going to survive you need someone to score goals. If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable.”

“It won't be for the lack of trying. We're finding that they (prospective player signings) prefer to sit in the reserves. They don't want the pressure of a dogfight. We're desperate, there's not doubt about that. To lose a point is devastating. We have to make sure that we don't sleep, stay alert for 90 minutes so we can keep a clean sheet. But I can't fault effort and commitment of the lads. Supporters have been good but will be disappointed with that.”
