Appleby on the mend

Midfielder Matty Appleby hasn't played this season due to hip damage but is hoping to resume training this week. Appleby has set himself a comeback date before Christmas. Matty said, “I took a shot and felt what was like an explosion in my hip. I had never suffered pain like it and I don't want to again. It was excruciating. I took a step to my right and it went again. There was nobody near me and I thought what the hell is going on? There were times when I thought I would never play again. I had gone as far as I could and I honestly felt that was it. Everything was a blur and I have never been so miserable in my life. I had only just got here and was showing some decent form as well as being made captain.”

“The frustration was unbelievable and I just didn't know where to turn. There was even talk of surgery and the success rate was put at 50-50. The injury had become chronic. I started work with Simon (physio) from scratch as though I had the operation. It was a gradual build-up and I took every day as it came. Now we seem to have got to the bottom of it. I still have a few aches and pains but nothing to write home about. I feel fit and need a few reserve team games to step up my levels. If it goes again I will have to seriously think about calling it a day. I couldn't face another nine months out. But I have never worked harder and, hopefully, I will get my reward because my contract does not run out until the end of next season.”
