Appleby to face disciplinary action

Matty Appleby is facing disciplinary action from Athletic after being sent off in the 7-1 debacle against Cardiff. Appleby's frustration got the better of him after 32 minutes – when his side were already four down – and he was dismissed for a second yellow card. The experienced midfielder, who has been captain in recent weeks, must serve a two-match ban, one for being dismissed and one for passing five bookings.

He will miss the Cambridge and Huddersfield games and coach Mick Wadsworth said: “We will look at taking some internal action. Matthew showed a complete lack of discipline, which he knows I don't like or accept. He isn't a baby, he is a senior player who should have more oil in his lamp. “Losing him made the rest of the game virtually impossible.” Appleby's red card topped an atrocious day for Athletic, who slumped to their biggest defeat in any competition for 33 years.
