Blitz hits back at Boundary Park sale suggestion

One of Athletic's owners has hit back at the suggestion that the club is for sale after the news leaked through the media from a confidential letter to a local politician.

Simon Blitz said from his New York Office, “The club is not for sale. That is absolutely not the case. We've had people making offers, for sure, but I if I ever did sell, somewhere way down the line, it'd only be to somebody who could drive the whole project forward. If anyone offered £20 million for the club tomorrow, of course I would listen to them. But I don't want someone just to come here and cream the site off for housing . What would be the point? We could have done that ourselves. Good progress has been made in many respects. What we need now is for certain players to start moving instead of sitting on their hands.”

Ian Hill from whom the leak apparently originated said, “We thought there was a lot of merit in the original plans, especially given the space problems at the Royal Oldham Hospital. However, we're now looking for support from outside Oldham as we've not made the progress we would have liked with some organisations. We're pushing ahead with the architects' plans and that is costing the owners hundreds of thousands of pounds. Questions about their commitment, therefore, seem very odd. We expect to submit a planning application in September. Our main concern now is to fill office space and we need interested parties willing to make a firm commitment. That would yield regular and long-term income to make this club and the whole stadium project viable.”
