The Latics manager has paid tribute to his teams performance at Pride Park where they knocked Derby County out of the Worthington Cup. The dramatic win in extra-time means that Athletic have now won seven consecutive games,
the first time this has been achieved for 29 seasons.

Under Jimmy Frizzell they set a club record of 10 straight league victories in the promotion year of 1973-74, a run which ended at Chesterfield. Dowie said, “I don’t know about records, but the mood we’re in at the moment makes us very difficult to beat. The lads were fantastic again – as soon as I walked into the club last year, I knew it was the best work ethic I’d ever seen. It’s great for the whole town and I want to keep winning games for as long as we possibly can. It’s a wonderful feeling and the lads can have a couple of days to rest and enjoy it. They certainly deserve to. Derby threw the kitchen sink at us for the last 20 minutes of the second half, so we had to stay very strong. Our passing game was nowhere near as good as it can be, but sometimes it’s about hanging in there and taking your chance when it comes along.”

The third-round draw takes place on Saturday afternoon, with teams involved in Europe now entering the competition.
