Branston turns down latest offer

Guy Branston claims that he has turned down Athletic's latest offer because it's “the sort of money you would pay a young kid”. Branston said, “I haven't turned down Oldham Athletic, in fact I would love to stay here. What I've turned down is the contract. I'm honestly not being greedy or flash, and I don't think I'm the best player at the club, but I think I should be paid like the senior professionals. It's great that the (now ex) manager says he wants to keep me, but it's the principle of where I fit into the wage structure. For an experienced pro who played a lot of games last season, the deal they put to me was disappointing. It was the sort of money you would pay a young kid who's on the fringes of the team, but hopefully this first offer was just a starting point for negotiations. I like the coaching staff and I like the club, plus I don't want to uproot if I can avoid it, but we are a million miles from agreeing anything. "

"Because of the arrangement with Wednesday, Oldham have been paying me less than people might think. I put Ronnie Moore in the picture and told him I would like it to be considered when the time came, but that hasn't been the case. In effect I'm looking at a massive pay cut. I'm not trying to pressurise Oldham because I know they aren't a rich club, but I've had offers to earn more money in League Two. That doesn't seem right, so my agent has told the manager we need to have a rethink. I still hope to be at Oldham Athletic next season playing a part in us moving forward, which the club is geared towards doing. At the same time, I've got to look at every option because it's a nightmare when you don't know where you'll be playing next month.”
