Cliff Byrne has left the club by 'mutual agreement.' The defender joined Athletic from Scunthorpe United in July 2012 and went on to make 41 league and cup appearances. He spent a three month loan spell back with the Iron before agreeing a deal to leave Boundary Park.

Latics boss Lee Johnson commented, "Cliff has been exemplary during his time here as a player, and it shouldn't go unnoticed how he helped me by doing an excellent job, when I first joined the club, during our fight for survival. Everyone at Oldham Athletic wishes Cliff well in his playing career and what will undoubtedly be a future coaching career."

Byrne said, "I have really enjoyed my time at Boundary Park. It's been terrific from the day I came in. I would like to thank the fans for their support. They have always been really good to me and I hope they appreciated my commitment to them. I think the team isn't far away from shooting up the table. There is a lot of quality in the dressing room and I wish them every success going forward."
