Chairman previews season

Latics' chairman Simon Corney has given his views on the upcoming season and he believes the club is moving in the right direction.

He said, "I think Lee has built a tremendous defence and the midfield is looking really strong at the moment. We probably need to reinforce up front with one or two players but we have the basis for a really good team at the moment. I always get incredibly excited at this stage of the season. Lee now knows what it takes to get into the top six of this division and he's working towards that."

"The new stand has given me a real lift. The fans and the workers at the club can see that there is growth at the club and that is very important. It's probably not going to be ready for the start of the season but that's okay. If I thought we had 12-15,000 fans to accommodate, it would worry me a bit more but that's not the case, unfortunately. We want to get it right, make sure it's perfect or as near to perfection as we can get it and if it's completely ready by January then I'm happy with that too."

"There is so much building going on around the place and the current leadership in the council has been great for the town. The stand is just a small part of it but it's an important part. We are going to have an amazing conference and banqueting facility here which is what the town needs. There is going to be a gym on the ground floor and hopefully a medical unit on the top floor so it's all falling into place. It takes a while and there is a long way to go but we will get there. I don't want to rush it though. I know it's happening now and it's taken me a long time to get to this stage but now we are nearly there, we want to get it right."
