Cheltenham shock Latics

Cheltenham Town shocked John Sheridan's side with a 0-1 victory at Boundary Park to dump the Latics out of this season's FA Cup. Although the home side had the major share of possession they couldn't get their authority to muster a goal while the visitors scored a lone goal by Lewis Montrose which proved to be enough on the night. It was the first away win for Cheltenham's manager Martin Allen.

A shocked Sheridan told the press, "We had great opportunities but we're giving teams a goal start. No disrespect to Cheltenham, but they've conceded over 20 goals away from home and we couldn't score. The only way Cheltenham would score was from a set play; everyone knew what they had to do and didn't do it, and it's cost us in the end. It was very frustrating all night. I will always defend my players no matter what - we had a go in the second half and created chances but at the end of the day we're out of the cup. We can't say we were unlucky because we should be winning games like this."

"We practice finishing every day in training and people have to do a lot better. I am angry inside in my own way because I know what it means and I know what we want to do. I really hope it hurts the players as much as it hurts me, because I hate losing. Now we have to stay positive ahead of a very hard game on Saturday and it's important we get a result. We must work hard. I have used the example of Chris Taylor a million times but he comes in and trains like he wants to be a footballer and some of the other players don't do that. That lad will go on somewhere and we will end up losing him the way he's playing. Some players come in and think they can have an off-day, but he trains the way he plays and I tell you, someone will take him. The older lads have been there and done it. I'm talking about people around Taylor's age - they must have that desire to be top footballers because it doesn't just come naturally."
