Corney comments on Sheridan contract

Simon Corney has spoken about the decision to extend the contract of John Sheridan after his "magnificent achievement" in bringing the club so far in his first season. He said, "Our league position is better than we anticipated, and obviously John has played an absolutely crucial part in the season we've had. I'm pleased to get his new contract sorted out and I think it works for everyone because the fans like him, he likes the fans and the players have responded very well. This contract had been on the table for a while, but you know what John's like. We just hadn't got round to getting it signed. He's a very laid-back character and there was never any doubt that he would be staying."

"I think his management style reflects his personality because there's something about him which is very relaxed but very effective. It's obviously working well and there is yet to be a single problem between John and any of his squad, which is rare when you've got 25 players to keep happy. We had faith in him from the start, we wouldn't have appointed him otherwise, but it's fair to say he has exceeded our expectations during his first season. To reach the play-offs would be a magnificent achievement, and to actually go up to the Championship would be even better."

"That's four managers in three and a half years, so we would love to find some continuity. And having John committed to the club until 2010 is exactly the kind of situation we believe will take us forward. There's no doubt it's a big financial commitment, but we all work well together and we also have some fun. It's a pleasure being involved with the current set-up, so let's hope it takes us all the way to promotion."
