Crewe boss fuming

Crewe boss Steve Holland was left fuming as he watched his side capitulate in a 1-4 home defeat at the hands of Athletic. The fume was tinged with relief as the other results went in the Railwaymen's favour and they will still be playing League One football next season as they avoided the dreaded relegation drop.

Holland told the official Alexandra website, "It is very important that we have managed to stay up. First and foremost. Over the course of the 46 games we have deserved to finish where we have finished but we are desperately disappointed with what happened today. It is not the first time we have seen that here this season and it just goes to highlight the job we have to get a team to do better. We have known for a while that there a need for some major surgery and today's performance is a timely reminder of that. We just needed a point and we have lost 4-1. We have played Oldham three times this season and lost three times. They are not in the play-offs, so there is a lot of work to do be done if we want to be where we want to be and competing at the top end of this league."

"We have got to look at what we have recruited and we have to do frankly is do better, because on the evidence of today it isn't good enough. The fans are here to see us perform and the frustrating thing is the players have done much better than this recently. Over the course of the season they have managed to stay up but that is not an achievement by any stretch of the imagination. We have had the threat of relegation over us for a long time, so to survive is a relief and today has really knocked me."
