Former Athletic defender David Holt has died at the age of 51. Holt, who cost the Latics a record fee of £25,000 (plus Tony Bailey) when he signed from Bury, died from a heart attack. He had emigrated to start a new life in New Zealand and had begun a postal courier business but he was found dead behind the wheel of his van.

David made his debut against Sheffield Wednesday in 1974 and made 399 league appearances, 155 of them for Athletic between 1974 and 1980. He usually wore the number 6 shirt but later teamed up as a number 3 with Ian Wood. He scored 11 goals in his career.
