Dayton strike ensures safety

James Dayton scored the only goal in the 1-0 victory at Brunton Park, a result that guaranteed safety from relegation for the visitors but a fight to win the last game for Carlisle who slipped deeper in trouble.

Lee Johnson declared, “The game-plan worked well. We knew we had to kill the occasion for them which is what we did. They had a couple of half opportunities but I thought we defended very well and then the game started to open up. That meant they threw men forward but when Dayton gets the ball one-on-one with the defender, there is only going to be one winner. I am really pleased for Dayton, as he has had an up-and-down season, personally. He’s a very good player and he hasn’t been able to show that enough."

"We had a spell where we lost one in 11 and he was fit and flying and all that was good about us. Our approach now is exactly the same. We want to continue the run. We want to score goals at home and probably haven’t scored enough. Can we play with that bit more freedom? We can, but at the same time I want to keep the unbeaten run going. I’m delighted for everyone associated with the club. We have had some high hurdles to overcome this year and it has been tough. We were favourites for relegation at the start of the year; hopefully next year can be a lot smoother.”
