Defender bid turned down

Hednesford Town have turned down a bid by Athletic to sign 18-year old defender Ashley Williams. Williams started his career at West Brom and has played two reserve games for the Latics. He did enough to convince manager Iain Dowie that he would be worth a gamble but a disappointed Alan Hardy said, “I discussed the matter with Iain Dowie and we agreed on the size of the offer we would make taking into account the player's age and past experience. Unfortunately Hednesford's valuation of the player is far higher than ours so it looks as if the matter is now closed.”

Dowie added, “I can get experienced players on free transfers because of the transfer market situation at present so we made what we considered to be a realistic offer for an untried youngster, unfortunately it wasn't acceptable to
Hednesford.”
