Iain Dowie commented on the Latics first league win of the season as follows, “I think I am relieved, but I think there's no question that we deserved to win the game. We played very well from the word go in the game. We could have scored after a minute, after that I thought our attacking play was excellent and there was only one bit of sloppy defending for their second goal.

It was a great strike from the fella (Onandi Lowe) and he's a handful. Him and Jack must be one of the best forward partnerships but we dealt with them very well. I thought Mark Hudson was outstanding again. Lowe's a good player and I thought Hudson and Will dealt with him very well.

So you concede to a wonder goal. That's two we've done. Blackpool by Danns and this time by Onandi Lowe and you think maybe that fate's conspiring against us. We got a good goal of our own but could have had more. We should
have certainly been three-up at half time. But you're always nervous. Someone doesn't track and it goes in but you think 'blimey'!

So I thought I'd refresh it a little bit. Matt comes on and gets the goal so I'm delighted for him because he's trying to get himself back in the program. He hit a sweet strike and it's no more than we deserved.”
