Dowie hopes to retain Zola

After Iain Dowies failure to entice Mark Hudson to remain at Boundary Park he is making plans to ensure that teenager Calvin Zola (pictured) will be around for the remainder of the season. Dowie cannot afford to lose another striker as he would just be left with Scott Vernon, his only current fit attacker. Zola has scored four goals to date and is coming to the end of his second month on loan. It is expected that Newcastle will re-new the short term loan but Dowie is looking at something more permanent.

After looking at the injury problems the Football League have given permission for Athletic to make two signings before their trip to Plymouth but one must be a goalkeeper. The administrators of the club have set a £500 per week maximum pay level but Dowie is hoping that it can be raised to attract more experienced players. He said, “It would be nice if someone had a word because we’d struggle to get someone from the Ryman League on that sort of money, never mind from a higher level.”
