Josh Low could be facing his old team on the opening of the season if Athletic can complete his signing in time. Low has impressed and Dowie hopes that he can make him a permanent fixture. He scored in the friendly against Newcastle and Dowie said of him, “It’s hard to judge on a game and a bit, but he did well and added something positive to the team.” Low is 23 and a specialist right wing-back and as Cardiff are looking to reduce their squad the Latics hope to pick him up for free.

Of the forthcoming season Dowie added, “Clean sheets are a prerequisite for
success and we’ll work until we cut out the mistakes which cost us goals. I’d like to see tighter marking but, overall, we go into the season in good heart. We didn’t get much reward in front of goal, but we looked quite potent going forward.”
