Dowie is all smiles

Following Athletic’s 2-0 success over Colchester, Iain Dowie’s after match comments were as follows, “You never want to lose two games in a row, so it was important to win and great to do it with such a good performance. Once we were 1-0 up I always felt another goal would come. Getting the second has been our problem at times this season, but we played some tremendous football. We absolutely murdered Colchester in the first half, and don’t forget they came here as one of the form teams in the division. They fancied themselves to get something from us, but they didn’t have the chance to pass it or cause any kind of threat. All the stuff I’ve read about our dodgy home record is a load of guff — it drives me bananas because I’ve always stayed positive and everybody else should have done the same.”

“We were magnificent in the first half and some of our play was a joy to watch. We showed some of our best passing for a long time and the goals were Premiership quality. The first came from a miscue, but John Eyre was waiting for it and he absolutely rattled his shot in. I’ve told John there’s nothing he can’t do on the ball because he is such a technically gifted player. And he’s also one of the best finishers at the club. David Eyres’ goal was sublime, but I’ve
always maintained that he should have played at a higher level.”

“We had excellence all over the pitch, with Clyde Wijnhard outstanding and Fitz Hall looking the complete article — his ban for the next two games is a big blow. We weren’t as bright in the second half, but the game was done and dusted by then and I think Colchester opted for damage limitation with 10 men. It might have been more entertaining if they had come out to win, but they didn’t want to open up because they knew what we could do. They had eight men, plus the goalkeeper, sitting in front of us, which made them difficult to break down. Our passing wasn’t sharp enough to do that, but we were never in danger of conceding apart from their one shot against bar.”

“Our next game is a massive one against QPR — the original sleeping giant — but if we go out with the same positive vibe, they will find us hard to handle.”
