Dowie sings Athletic's praises again

Iain Dowie has again praised his team for their courageous display at Swindon Town. He said, “When we went down to 10 men and lost another centre-half (Julien Baudet sent off and David Beharall injured) we were up against it. I don’t like singling out players but will make an exception with Lee Duxbury (pictured). His display was “colossal” and he is one of the best players I have worked with. The drive and commitment of all the players was outstanding and Lee was that little bit above everybody else. Clyde Wijnhard was also fantastic and destroyed their backline on his own. It was tremendously pleasing and I cannot think of a prouder moment in football. We were far from our best but the side's desire and belief were key factors in helping them clinch maximum points. We have all worked particularly hard and if you keep your foot on the pedal then hopefully you will get the rewards."

"We didn't start the game well and when you go down to 10 men it is about looking inside yourself to go that extra mile. The players went further than that and ran a marathon for me today. Everybody was still running at the end. Tony Philliskirk made a great point. He said we can do everything we can but what the players gave us came from within and that is testimony to the work ethic we are trying to build at the club.”

Duxbury said, “I think my game is about getting forward and I like the attacking part of the game more. There wasn't any player who you could point your finger at with everybody playing well. It is very enjoyable and it is nice to be
back in the side because it was disappointing not to be playing at the start of the season. You have to take the knocks on the chin, get on with it and be a good professional. It is no use spitting out your dummy. I have got on with things and regained my place.”

Athletic’s current Second Division statistics are as follows:
Longest run of wins - 6
Longest run of home wins - 3
Longest run of away wins - 3
Longest run without an away defeat - 6
Best defence - 6 goals
Best away defence - 1 goal

It all goes to prove that they are finally turning the corner and can now be considered as serious promotion contenders.
