Dowie wins award

Iain Dowie has been named manager of the month for the Second Division after guiding Athletic to six wins in September with a scoring record of 18 goals for and four against. Joe Royle, in 1994, was the last Boundary Park boss to win the manager of the month award after his team had taken seven points out of nine in their Premiership relegation fight and also had two FA Cup victories. Unfortunately for the Latics they eventually got relegated.

The current form is their longest winning streak for 21 years. Dowie also received a performance of the week trophy after hammering Mansfield 6-1. Commenting, Dowie said, “I get the plaudits as manager, but there’s no question that this is for everyone at the club. We are doing all we can to make things as professional as possible and there has been a massive all-round effort. It's a club award. The players deserve tremendous credit for the way they have coped with our training, they have been open and receptive and I give them a big vote of thanks.”

The manager of the month award is traditionally the kiss of death. Dowie went on, “Winning six in a row is a kind of curse anyway – it makes people want to turn you over and make you look like fools. If we approach things right, there’s no reason we can’t carry on in the same vein.”

Dowie was quick to add that he still has a lot to learn, “It's very nice to win the award following on from the performance of the week for the win over Mansfield, but I'm a young manager, still making my way in the game and reputations are made over seasons not months.” Let’s hope it’s the first of many such awards for Iain Dowie.
