Downing not happy

Cheltenham Town manager Keith Downing commented after the 4-0 defeat at Boundary Park, "We came here with high hopes after a couple of decent results and with three new faces but it was a very disappointing performance. We came up against a very good Oldham side and a very good attacking player in Lee Hughes, who is always a threat in the box. He had a fantastic game and won the match for them. It's the first time I've suffered a result like that, we don't normally lose 4-0, and I think that aside from the quality of their front two the main reasons were that we were poor on the ball without the solidity behind it. I can accept if people are not having a good day on the ball but I cannot accept a lack of solidity in what we do. We've prided ourselves on that for the last three or four years with people working hard behind the ball but we didn't do that well enough today."

"Too many crosses came in and too many shots came in. I'm not going to pick out individuals because the whole team lost its solidity. When you do that against Oldham in their current form then you're going to get opened up. Andy Gallinagh came in and screened the back four admirably for the first half especially. We were without David Bird and Craig Armstrong but there are no excuses because we didn't do enough when we were without the ball. We thought we would have enough to give them some problems. We didn't want to come here and shut up shop but we were poor in most departments and I'm looking for a reaction now. I'm scratching my head at the manner of the defeat and the players have now got to go out on Tuesday night and earn themselves a place in the team for the Leicester game."

"We've got some great games coming up next week, I want the players to fight for the shirt and be part of it but they have to contribute more than they did today. I will hold my hand up as well in terms of the shape that we sent out because I'm the kind of person who will take responsibility. We'll dust ourselves down on Monday and look ahead to the visit of Stoke on Tuesday because that is another opportunity for us. David Bird and Craig Armstrong are 50/50 for that game but Bristol City have given permission for Jennison Myrie-Williams to play. Even though we have conceded goals we still have cover at the back so we need to strengthen in other areas."
