Eyres released

David Eyres has been released by Athletic and is now a free agent. The 42 year old Latics hero was recently granted a testimonial game and is the Football League's oldest outfield player. Eyres was born in Liverpool and has made more than 200 appearances for the Latics, scoring 44 goals, since he arrived at Boundary Park from Preston North End back in 2000. It was fitting that Eyres scored the only Latics goal in his final appearance last Saturday when the home team entertained Scunthorpe. It's just a pity that it couldn't have been the match winner.

Eyres has made over 800 appearances in total and was formerly at Blackpool and Burnley and is keen to continue playing. Ronnie Moore said, "He has been a terrific servant and we all wish him well for the future."

FootyMad wish David all the best in his quest for a new club. He has always been a gentleman and true team player. Even though his playing time has been limited under Ronnie Moore's regime he has always remained the true professional and has always held the fans in high esteem. Good luck David.
