Former Latics' winger, Peter Phoenix, has died at the age of 83 after a battle with dementia. He spent five years at Boundary Park, between 1957 and 1962 after joining from Tamworth at the age of 21.

He was part of the great team that included the likes of Jimmy Frizzell, Bobby Johnstone, Alan Williams and Bert Lister. Peter was the club's top scorer in the 1958/59 season with 14 and he made 178 appearances with 31 goals.

He also played in the famous FA Cup game in 1962 when the club eventually lost 2-1 at home to Liverpool in front of 42,000 spectators. He later joined Rochdale as part of a swap deal for the late Colin Whitaker.
