Furman added to the jigsaw

Athletic have recruited another piece of the puzzle in South African midfielder Dean Furman who has signed from Scottish champions Rangers. Furman is 21 and has signed a three year deal after the Latics and Rangers agreed a compensation payment in line with the FIFA rules. Furman began his career with Chelsea but then moved to Ibrox at the end of the 2005/06 season. Last season he went on loan to Bradford City and made 33 appearances while scoring four goals.

Dave Penney said, "You can't argue with Dean's pedigree - Chelsea and Rangers, while also being on the brink of breaking into the South Africa team. He's a good age, got some good experience with Bradford and is ready to step up a level with us. I'm pleased we were able to agree a compensation figure with Rangers and we're well-stocked in central midfield now with Danny Whitaker, Jon Worthington, Rob Purdie and Dale Stephens."

"I know Bradford were very keen [to keep Furman] and that says something about Dean. But once we'd spoken to Dean I knew he'd come here. He did very well with Bradford and I'm confident he will continue his progress at the higher level."

The full Athletic squad began pre-season training yesterday and Dave Penney has been pleased with the progress he has seen in the first session.
