Athletic's club president, Geoffrey Butterworth, has died at the age of 91. Mr. Butterworth started his association with the club back in 1948 when the Manchester University graduate was appointed the club dentist. He then went on to become a director in 1975, remaining on the board for 24 years. He was immediately named club president after he resigned from the board in November 1999.

Alan Hardy commented, "I have known Geoffrey for the last 26 years, and always found him to be a true gentleman and a good friend. In the Eighties and Nineties, Geoffrey and I worked closely on the commercial side of the club and we had an excellent working relationship. He was passionate about this club and rarely missed a home game until a couple of seasons ago, when he found it more difficult to get down to Boundary Park."

"Geoffrey will be sadly missed by everyone associated with the club and we are making plans to pay a special tribute to him prior to our home game against Northampton. He will be dearly missed by everyone at Boundary Park."

Mr. Butterworth leaves a wife, Evelyn, and two children.
