Athletic continued their pre-season build up with a 1-2 win at Grimsby Town. They took the lead after five minutes when JP Kalala (pictured) fired in a half volley which went through a ruck of players to beat an unsighted Phil Barnes. The Mariners fought back but Deane Smalley sealed the win five minutes from time after a Chris Taylor cross from the right left him with the easy task of turning the ball into the roof of the net from four yards.Manager John Sheridan was pleased with the performance in which new trialist Demar Phillips showed great promise. Shez looks like having the welcome problem of having to decide who to leave out. The next tests against Derby County and Hull City will provide a better insight.
