Hughes released

Lee Hughes has now been released from prison and Director Barry Owen has issued a statement through Latics World. Hughes is currently with his relatives at home in the Midlands and is expected to link up with the Latics some time next week.

Mr. Owen, who negotiated the contract with Hughes, said, "We have gone through quite a programme of events over the last three to four months, and Lee has now been granted parole. There has been a lot of media attention and interest in our intentions surrounding Lee. There has been much speculation, and we have now made provisional arrangements for a press conference, which will be announced shortly. The decision as to when Lee will play is now down to John Sheridan and Tommy Wright once he starts work with us."

"Lee is currently on a short leave period to re-acquaint himself with his family and acclimatise in the outside world. I would like to congratulate our loyal fans who have supported the club through a lot of malicious statements and criticism from all over the country, which were expected. A number of people entered the moral argument, but this is not one we intend to pursue. However, it is interesting to point out that it has not all been criticism. We have had numerous letters and e-mails sent to the club which I have collated to show Lee. These include messages of support from Coventry and West Bromwich Albion fans wishing him well, and one particular individual has contacted us from Western Australia. Lee has also been approached by the West Bromwich Albion supporters' association, who wish him well and intend to travel to watch one of his early games. While looking forward to Lee's arrival, we have no intention to glorify matters. Whilst not wanting to patronise anyone, as a family club we are very aware of the victims of the incident involving Lee, and will always be mindful of their feelings and suffering."
