Athletic were knocked out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Morecambe after a tense penalty shoot-out. Danny Whitaker set the stage with the opener for Athletic but Morecambe struck back through a Stewart Drummond volley.

A disappointed John Sheridan explained, "It's very frustrating to go out, and we've shot ourselves in the foot given the number of chances we had. We could have been 3-0 up within half an hour, but it's not to be. There was some excellent football in the first half and we created chances, but we got sloppy after the break. I'm sick of telling players to take care of the ball, and the build-up to the goal was a joke. But I'm trying not to get too down. We should have won the game and I know that. Full credit to Morecambe for battling away - their keeper had one of those nights and he was excellent. Danny Whittaker (pictured) was our best player on the pitch by a mile. He popped up with an excellent goal as well as some other decent shots, and he looked bright and lively."
