Latics battle for draw

The Latics battled to a very useful 0-0 draw against Leicester at the Walkers Stadium. They were reduced to 10 in the 49th minute after goalkeeper Greg Fleming brough down Matty Fryatt for a penalty. The keeper was shown a red card for a professional foul and Dean Windass (pictured) was forced to don the gloves as the Latics did not name a goalkeeper as a substitute. The first action that Windass had to do was face Fryatt in a penalty shot. However, City's leading scorer blazed the penalty wide and the miss seemed to fire up the visitors and give them the confidence that they needed to ride out the game. The defensive rearguard performed miracles and the Latics were dreadfully unlucky not to come away with all three points.

A jubilant John Sheridan told Latics World, "I am very happy with the point and I thought we were always in the game throughout. The players' character and attitude were different class and they deserve the plaudits. Even with ten men would could have nicked it and full credit to the players for getting a point with ten men against the league leaders."

"I can't complain about Greg's red card. Those are the rules of the game and I have no argument, and Deano's gone in goal to keep a clean sheet! The lads put their bodies on the line where that was required and we defended very well. Leicester are a very difficult side to play against. You must win your scraps and seconds against them, and we tried to play when we could and cause them a few problems."

"I hope people watching that come away from it thinking 'Oldham aren't a bad side'. If we battle and scrap for everything like we did today week in, week out we'll be okay. We defended properly throughout today. A clean sheet here against the league leaders should give us a boost and we should look ahead to next week with confidence."
