The Latics brushed aside Mansfield Town with ease in the first round Carling Cup tie at Boundary Park. Kilkenny, Kalala, Smalley and Davies got the goals with Mullins bagging a consolation for the visitors.

Manager John Sheridan was obviously delighted by the way his side performed and is looking forward to a home draw when the next round is pulled out of the hat.

He said, "I just want a home tie. At this stage of the competition I want to get a winnablegame and then a big one in the third round. I'd like to go as far as we can, Wycombe are proof it can be done. If we can keep winning games it builds confidence. A little cup run would give the supporters a bit of hope, and then you never know."
