Latics come unstuck

The Latics came unstuck when ex-player Willie Donachie brought his Millwall team to town. Donachie deservedly received a standing ovation from the Latics fans before the match began. The game started well enough and came to life when Paul Warne gave the Latics the lead with a fine header in the 55th. minute. After that though, it was all downhill. Williams equalised for the visitors and then Stam (pictured) handled the ball in the box and Byfield scored the winner from the spot. To make matters worse, both Will Haining and Neal Eardley will miss the Bournemouth game after they both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season.

Manager John Sheridan was obviously disappointed and he said, "I said to Tommy Wright before the game that there wasn't the usual buzz around the dressing room, which there should be when you're top of the league. It's disappointing to pass up a great opportunity to get further away from other teams at the top. You could see we missed three players who have been very important to the run we're on. I said to them after the game that it's difficult for lads like Edwards and Stam to come in and click straight away having not played much football. I'm not saying that they let us down, they certainly didn't, but we weren't at the races all over the pitch. We didn't get the ball down and play our usual game."

"Full credit to Millwall, though. They made things difficult for us and slowed the game down to frustrate us. They came with a game plan, and they've got a good player in Byfield up front."
