Latics could dip into the loan market

The Latics could be dipping into the loan market to complete their collection of new players for next season. John Sheridan has done a marvellous job of rebuilding his squad but still feels that he needs a couple more new faces, particularly a left back, to make his team one that can become a serious contender for promotion this time around. With two transfer fees already paid, striker Craig Davies and midfielder Mark Allott, the club have splashed around £80,000.

It could have been more but for Chris Porter's controversial move to Motherwell. Simon Blitz was quick to point out, "We had budgeted to receive £500,000 plus but unfortunately, and I blame Porter for this not his agent or anyone else, that situation obviously changed. What's done is done and we've got to move on, but as a result we are pretty much on our budget. It's necessary to look around and see who is available on loan, although that doesn't mean I am ruling out any more permanent signings. Our squad is looking quite strong at the moment, but there are a couple of areas to strengthen. We are working hard to put that right."

Athletic are still hoping that Neil Kilkenny (pictured) can be persuaded to make a move back to Boundary Park.
