Latics crash out

Athletic limped out of the FA Cup at home to Hudderfield Town. After the euphoria of winning at Everton in the last round, they came down to earth with a big bump as they crashed to a 0-1 defeat. Ironically, it was old boy Luke Beckett (pictured) who got the only goal when his early header was enough to win the tie. Athletic currently have major scoring problems and have scored a blank on the last three outings, some supporters admitting that they were lucky to get none!

Boss John Sheridan told Latics World, "I don't think we played too badly and we had lots of possession, but our problem is we can't score goals and if you don't do that you won't win. We created one or two chances, but for me we didn't create enough as the home team. The lack of goals is a big concern, when you get to the final third it's all about creating things, especially at home. We need to play that bit quicker, get our weight of pass sorted, and we're making the wrong runs at the wrong time. That's something we will have to learn. I've got some young players in the side and they need to learn fast. The goal was very sloppy on our part and it gave them that bit of belief."

"I can't fault the lads' effort, as they took the game to Huddersfield after going a goal down, and on another day we could have possibly got a draw or even nicked it. We had a lot of ball in their half but just didn't trouble their goalkeeper enough. I know I have to bring a couple of players in and I will continue to try and do that. Now we must prepare for a tough game against Carlisle at home on Tuesday. There's a great opportunity there because we need to improve our home form, but we must perform better than we did today."
