Latics fail against Wycombe

Latics failed in their attempt to land their first silverware of the season. Taking on Wycombe Wanderers, in what was effectively the final of the San An Cup in Ibiza, they dominated the first half but only managed one goal through Paul Warne (pictured), scored in the 7th minute. Wycombe equalised halfway through the second half through Roger Johnson and the game went to the dreaded penalty shoot-out. Andy Liddell, Chris Killen and Delroy Facey all missed their spot kicks and even though Les Pogliacomi saved two penalties it wasn't enough and Wycombe won 3-1.

A disappoined Ronnie Moore obviously made some decisions as to future penalty takers and said, “We ought to have had the match won in the first half when we created so many chances but failed to take them. We were over-run in the second half when Wycombe changed to 4-3-3 and we could not cope. We came to win the cup and as professional footballers we should be disappointed at losing any match.”
