Latics fall to their first defeat for some time

The Latics fell to their first defeat for some time at Chesterfield after Colin Larkin's hit a brace against the visitors. Neal Eardley pulled one back just before the half time whistle but although the Latics tried hard after the break they just couldn't do enough to make it count.

Fresh from his often quoted "kiss of doom - manager of the month award" a disappointed John Sheridan told the official website, "We were always going to lose somewhere, and it's important we bounce back now. We've done it before and there's no reason why we can't do it again. We've taken knocks before and come back strongly. I don't think we deserved anything from the game. Chesterfield were the better team, so credit to them. They got in and around us, in and around Richie Wellens (pictured), were first to the ball all around the pitch, and were quicker and brighter than us. I know we can perform a lot better and I won't stand for performances like that. I don't mind going down fighting but we couldn't string two passes together and too many people were off their game. If that happens, you won't get anything no matter who you're playing. I just don't think we turned up today but I'm not too downhearted. I've said things to the lads and we'll all have a chat on Monday when we've calmed down a bit. I don't want to get too down about the result. We all have off days, we've been on a terrific run and the lads have been different class, to be fair. We've got two home games coming up now, and a chance to redeem ourselves by getting six points. Myself, the staff and the lads will stay nice and bright and enjoy next week prior to the Brighton game."
