Latics fight back for victory

The Latics had to fight back against Gillingham after going a goal down on the half hour but Chris Taylor brought the home team level just before half time. Craig Davies (pictured) completed the comeback with a goal in the 67th. minute and gave manager John Sheridan his second consecutive home win, a relief for the fans too who have struggled to watch some pitiful home performances of late.

Sheridan was very pleased with the turnaround and he told Latics World, "I was very happy with the second half performance, although it's all about winning now and that's what we did today. I wasn't happy with the first half. We didn't play well at all and looked edgy for some reason. Having played well against Carlisle and Swansea you'd have expected us to be full of beans and confident of winning the game. But for the first half hour or so our play was sloppy, the tempo was poor, everything about the game was poor. We upped it once we'd got the goal, though, and it was a good finish from Chris. Then we dominated the game in the second half, and I'm disappointed we didn't win the game by a greater margin. You never know, those extra goals might come in handy at some point."

"I actually said to Tommy on the side that we needed to score by half-time, and when we did it gave us belief going in at the break. I think we prefer kicking towards our fans at the Chaddy End and it seems to lift our game. In the second half I think everyone in the ground believed we could go on and win. Obviously I'm pleased for Craig Davies because he got the winning goal, but from one to eleven we raised our game in the second half and played better as a team."

"We know that Bristol's pitch isn't great so it will be a battle there. We're going there to try and win, and then we're back here next weekend. I'm just taking things one game at a time and trying to win each one as it comes along, but we've got three points today and I want another three at Bristol. We're not going for a draw. I've always said that two points per game will get you into the play-offs and we've got three today so that's an extra point."
