The Latics dealt Scunthorpe their first defeat since August 16th in a pulsation match at Boundary Park on Wednesday evening. Hero of the night was 19 year old Lewis Alessandra (pictured) who capped a return to the team with a devastating hat-trick. Manager John Sheridan told Latics World, "I threw Lewi in tonight and I'm very pleased for him. The problem is he hasn't been scoring goals and tonight he showed me what he can do, although I already know that. You live off your strikers and Lewi and Lee Hughes were excellent tonight. I'm delighted for Lewi. Hopefully this will boost his confidence - we all know he has great ability and will score goals."

"It was an excellent result from an excellent game with plenty of quality on display. You can see why Scunthorpe are at the top of the league at the moment. There were two good sides out there playing the right way; it could have been 2-2 or 3-2 at half-time. They were in the game in the first half. We got a bit of luck with the deflection for the first goal. The turning point came when they hit the bar and we went up the other end and scored. After that we bossed the game and could have won five- or six-nil, but we can't grumble with three goals and a clean sheet. I was very pleased with the way we went about things and I got a response from the players. This is a great result and should give us lots of confidence going into the Yeovil game. We need three points on Saturday and must stay with the pack."
