Latics gain first win in seven outings

The Latics eased their relegation worries with a fine win at rapidly falling Walsall. It was the Latics first win in seven outings, a period where the Saddlers have gained just two points, and couldn’t have come at a better time. Neil Kilkenny was impressive in the first half and his pass to Luke Beckett should have given the visitors an early lead.

The winner was notched in the 72nd. minute when Beckett (pictured) got his second goal in as many games after a David Eyres free-kick. The Oldham back four were very impressive and Paul Merson’s men just couldn’t find a way through. The victory gives the Latics a 5 point cushion from safety, but more importantly they are starting to look like a confident team again.

After the match Ronnie Moore said, "It was a crucial win for us. I thought we deserved to win. Walsall are on a little wobble at the moment and it was probably the best time to play them. What it has done is drawn Walsall back into the pack and that means it is making life very interesting in the bottom half of the table. It eases that pressure and sets us up for the game against Hull on Monday. We defended very well and they were few chances for Walsall which was surprising for a home side."
