Latics legend George Hardwick has died. George was regarded as one of the greats of English football and was a very popular and successful player-manager who took the Latics to promotion in the Third Division North in the 1952-1953 season. George captained every team he played for and also represented England and Great Britain. His last game for the Latics was at Boundary Park on 26th. April 1956 against Wrexham.

A statue of him was unveiled at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesborough and Hardwick has been named in the top 100 players of the century. In all he made 203 appearances for the Latics and scored 14 goals, not bad for a full back. He also received 13 England caps and appeared 17 times as a War-Time International. George also represented Great Britain in the Great Britain v Rest of Europe match in 1947. A minutes silence will be held in George's memory before tonight's match, ironically against Wrexham.
