The Latics fell to their first pre-season loss with a 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury on Friday night. Craig Rocastle notched his first goal in a Latics shirt to put the visitors ahead in the first half but two goals in the second half killed off any hope of a third successive win.

Chris Swailes (pictured) continued his comeback and played well and was suffering no ill effects after his first real outing. Latics manager John Sheridan used the game to experiment with different formations and said, "The first half was very good, and if we'd have kept the same side out for the second half, the game would have been over and done with. However, these games are all about finding players out and giving people a chance."
