Latics management are still upbeat

Although Athletic lost the last two pre-season games, Stockport (2-0), Middlesbrough (1-0) the Latics management are still upbeat.

John Breckin said, “We played some good football and I was pleased with the two performances. We did especially well against Middlesbrough because they used all their big hitters like Ugo Ehiogu and Gareth Southgate. The point of these games was improving fitness, which is something we drill into the lads every day. Everybody got at least half an hour, and now we start building up to the full 90 minutes. At this stage, Ronnie and myself are honestly not bothered about results – we’ve got a pre-season plan and it’s going well. Everything is geared towards playing Yeovil on August 6 because you don’t want to peak too early.”

The Latics continued their pre-season by beating Stalybridge 2-0 at Bower Fold on Tuesday night. The scorers were Griffin and Liddell. Next up is the visit to the Isle of Man for the now almost annual tournament.
