Allan Smart and Paul Murray (pictured) were held after two police officers were injured during a violent struggle near Chadderton police station after an argument with a taxi driver at 2.30am.

Officers were alerted to a disturbance outside the Victoria Street police station and when they went to investigate it is believed a fight started. One officer suffered whiplash and another sustained a sprained thumb in the incident. It is believed one of the footballers was also taken to hospital suffering from an eye injury.

They wre both arrested and are being questioned by police. Alan Hardy commented, “We are not prepared to make a statement at this stage until all
the facts are to hand. However, I must make it clear that if any player breaks the club's discipline guidelines then they will be severely dealt with by the club to protect the good name of Oldham Athletic.”
