Latics slump to bottom

The Latics slumped to the bottom of League One with another disappointing home defeat, this time at the expense of Southend United. Manager John Sheridan has been trying to gee up the players and has been promising no more lax performances but he has yet to find the right formula for that to happen.

Leon Clarke scored the goal that quietened Boundary Park and although the home side had the majority of the possession they just couldn't get the ball in the net again. The team have now scored just three goals in the last five league games.

Sheridan told Latics World, "The important thing is that no matter who we play we have to start winning and picking up points. We should have got something from the game, and the sending-off should have helped us. When they're down to 10 men I was confident of winning the game even at 1-0 down. But we didn't use the extra man enough, the players didn't know where to move to be a threat and we didn't move the ball quickly enough. In the end we made it quite easy for them. Again we had plenty of crosses but it's about people being in there on the end of them. How many times do I have to tell people?"

"If some people don't start listening, they will be left out of the side. Believe me, no-one out there today played well enough to be able to say to themselves they'll be in the team at Walsall next week. We're in a bit of a slump and we need to work hard and stick together to get out of it. I can do all the talking I want but it's important we start winning games. If we don't we'll find ourselves in a dangerous position. We're all down at the moment and we're bottom of the league. We need to win a game and win fast. I've not really had a losing run like this since the start of last season. I'm going into the dressing room and doing things I didn't do last season, like having a go at people and telling them what to do and I don't like doing it."

"Last year we only lost a couple of games where you held your hands up and admitted we deserved it, but this season I'm saying the same thing every week. I don't like it and it mustn't be very nice for the players to hear. I've told them I don't want to fall out with people and it's important we stay together and try and get out of this together. I've been in this position as a player and hopefully your luck changes with a bit of hard work. Today there was nothing between the teams, but we had no cutting edge and weren't in the right areas to score goals. Also, sometimes when we're defending we try and win balls when we should be dropping off. We're making silly mistakes and they're costing us. I know it's early days but I hate losing. We're on a bad run and I'm wary of where we are but I know we can get on a little run and climb the league."
